Get your halo and buy direct from local Artists and Makers this Christmas.

‘Shop small, unique and independent’ are familiar phrases at this time of year, but its not just a slogan, it’s a way to connect to bigger issues by making small changes. Not only can you save money by buying directly from local artists and makers, the artists keep more of the money and you are more than likely shopping more sustainably too.

Most independent artists and makers I know are conscious about creative process and the environment. They are careful and selective in choices of resource, minimising waste, carbon footprint or harmful bi products where possible. If you regularly shop independently and locally, it benefits the whole local economy and minimises carbon emissions. Buying direct and in person from artists, studios, craft stalls or fayres also means that you’re connecting with the artists first hand and can see and handle the works ‘In real Life’. Online shopping can be convenient, but you miss the chatting, browsing and tactile experience, which can make you feel more festive too. Buying from an artist or maker means you are supporting a physical person and their family, even when you’re buying something small, you make a significant difference to their day or year.

So wherever you are, look up your local artist for those last minute gifts. You don’t’ have to worry about missing the postal deadline for Christmas or presents getting damaged or lost in transit. Making direct, inhouse purchases or choosing click and collect from your local artists, gives you connective, unique, sustainable, affordable, secure purchases; which will give your halo and the makers a festive glow.
