Get your halo and buy direct from local Artists and Makers this Christmas.

‘Shop small, unique and independent’ are familar hashtags on social media, but its not just a hashtag, it’s a way to connect to bigger issues by making small changes. Not only can you save money by buying directly from local artists and makers in the UK, rather than through 3rd parties or internet sites, the artists keep more of the money and you are more than likely shopping more sustainably.

Most independent artists and makers I know are concious about creative process and the environment. They are careful and selective in choices of reasource, minimising waste, carbon footprint or harmful bi products where possible. If you regularly shop independently and locally, it benefits the whole local economy and minimalises carbon emmissions. Shopping from local makers means you are not buying imported goods.

Buying direct and in person from artists, from their own sites, studios, craft stalls or fayres also means that youre connecting with the artists first hand and can see and handle the works ‘IRL’ (as my 10 year old son would say), or ‘In real Life’ for those that dont know. Photos are good, which is great for online representation of works, but it feels like the healthy habit of going out to shop and meet people, chat, browse and touch is an important one to reinstate post pandemic. Its make you feel more festive too.

Lastly, buying from an artist or maker means you are supporting a physical person and thier family, even when your buying something small, you make a significant difference to their day or year.

Wherever you are in the country, look up your local artist for those last minute gifts. You dont have to worry about missing the postal deadline for Christmas or presents getting damaged or lost in transit. Making direct, inhouse purchases or choosing click and collect from your local artists, gives you connective, unique, sustainable, affordable, secure purchases; which will give your halo and and the makers a festive glow.

If you are local to Ayres House Studios in Oxfordshire, our Winter Exhibition is on until the 17th Dec, manned each day by the local artists and makers exhibiting; and Wallingford Town is full of wonderful independant shops and cafes.
