Paul Whitehouse
Painting and Sculpture
Paul celebrates the man-made and natural environment in paint and sculpture. He likes to weave a story into his work, reflecting on our place in the landscape and the ‘echoes’ we leave behind. You’ll see lots of geometric shapes in both his painting and sculpture, strong contrasts of light and dark and a ‘earthy’ naturalistic palette. Painting mainly in oils, Paul often underpaints very loosely in acrylics to create random marks that inform the final work. His sculpture is more abstract but still inspired by natural forms and repeating patterns in nature. Working mainly in stone, Paul is starting to experiment with other media that might enable him to realise his ideas more effectively.
Paul came to art quite late in life. Starting with life drawing classes around 2014, he took painting classes at Art Academy in London and, more recently, an intensive mentoring course at the Newlyn School of Art in Cornwall. After a career in environmental science, Paul retired in 2020 to devote more time to his growing interest in making art. You’ll often find him working from his rather cramped studio in Crowmarsh Gifford, surrounded by an odd collection of sticks, stones and fossils, listening to Radio 4.
In 2021, Paul took part in Sky Arts Landscape Artist of the Year and his heat, at The Eden Project in Cornwall, was aired in February 2022. He has also exhibited at The Mall Galleries in London, the Crypt Gallery in St. Ives, Oxfordshire Museum at Woodstock, Turrill Sculpture Garden in Oxford, and regularly exhibits with Reading Guild of Artists and Oxford Art Society.
